Daniel Mitchell (b. 1996, Sydney) is a photographic artist whose work deals with the notions surrounding photo-documentation and spatial occupation. Mitchell’s aesthetic boasts a richness of colour and texture, and is often undertoned by the typological format. Mitchell’s work also probes heavily in to the world of publication, in which he has self-published a number of photobooks and magazines in recent years such as Dog Days (2017), Corriere (2016) and East 13th St (2016).

Germs (2017) explores the relationship between creation and destruction by photographic means. e work comprises of a series of images that are created by germs, rather than the camera alone. Bacteria are swabbed from various locations and then applied back on to the photographic negative of the space in which the bacteria were captured from. ese ‘germs’ then colonise the physical layer of the photographic negative and overpower the visual elements of the image. This process orchestrates an interaction between life and image. e action of creating a new image only comes a er the original is destroyed. Germs subverts what we usually expect of a photograph; the visible and invisible become confused. Cultivated bacteria are seen in their new visualized form but they feature as both an instrument of destruction, and as authors in the creation of a new perspective.
