Vasili Papathanasopoulos (b.1996, Sydney) is a digital photo media artist living and working out of Sydney, Australia. He received formal education and training in photography, BA in Design (Honours) in Photography, at the University of Technology Sydney. Papathanasopoulos’ works mainly within the moving image and photography. He uses the two mediums to explore and decipher between current social issues, finding these issues and the way society approach them interesting.
Papathanasopoulos’ recent exhibitions include his co curated show Arbiters, curated by Vasili Papathanasopoulos & Orson Heidrich, Kudos Gallery, Sydney (2018) Honours 2018, curated by Natalya Hughes & Sara Oscar, UTS Gallery, Sydney (2018) and Come On In, The Water's Just Fine, curated by Natalya Hughes, Cherine Fahd & Todd McMillan, UTS Gallery, Sydney (2017). He has been featured in a variety of national awards including a finalist in the IPF Photo Prize 2016 and his work featured in Capture Magazine's Australasia's Top Emerging Photographers 2018.
In 2019, Papathanasopoulos curated Call It What You Want To, which premiered at 2019 Sydney Fringe Festival. The immersive installation transformed the perception of space and examined the way varying mediums can work in unison to create a platform, in which audience participation was encouraged to activate and reveal the meaning of the installation.
